Gateway to Volunteering

Gateway to Volunteering is a project that empowers young people to give their time serve their community. Gateway Action works closely with Manor CE School to provide exciting opportunities for young people in Years 9-11. We currently run 4 different projects for young people to get involved with.

Curve

This is all about running the Curve Youth Club.

Curve happens every Friday during term time and runs at The Gateway Centre (on Front Street) from 7.30pm-9.30pm. We're looking for volunteers who are willing to come along at 6.30pm, help us get the place set up, then help us run the night. You'll get opportunities to run the cafe, games, and help us organise trips and outings.

We're really flexible so if you come along with ideas, then we'll look at how we can change things. We'll ask you to commit to a minimum of 20 hours (that's 6 weeks) and at the end you get a posh certificate and some great experience that will help you in life, and also look good on your CV.

So if you're in School Years 9-11 and interested, go to the Facebook Page and join in! We'd love to have you on board with this exciting volunteering opportunity.

Reel Youth Media

Reel Youth Media is about young people making short documentary films of local issues.

It's for young people in school year 9-11 and it runs on a Monday from 4-6pm at The Gateway Centre, Front Street, Acomb. It doesn't matter whether you're an expert film director, or you've never held a camera in your life before. Everyone is welcome to join in with this exciting project.

We take 10 young people at a time and we learn things like how to research a documentary, how to film, how to edit, produce and publish films. It's very much learning as you go so it's all very practical. We'll be out and about filming people. Each group of young people have 10 weeks to make the film, and there's also a project happening over the summer holidays. We'll take a group of 10 and make a film over 5 days.

If you're interested, join the Facebook Page. It's on a first come, first served basis so get in quickly if you want to be a part of it

Dig it!

Only you can make the difference. You can make the difference in your own life, and in the lives of people you haven’t met yet.

We invite you to take part in a project that will change lives, a project where you will see change with your own eyes – change that you have made happen. You’ll be breaking down barriers, creating trust and spreading a bit of happiness in the world. You’ll be transforming the gardens of elderly and infirm fellow citizens, and in doing so, you’ll be changing their lives and smashing generational barriers. You’ll learn and you’ll teach. You’ll learn about yourself and about other people, and you’ll teach about people like you. You’ll learn skills you’ll use for the rest of your life, and just to put the icing on the cake, it will count towards your Citizenship GCSE, and your Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Whether you plan to go to university or straight into work it will make your application or CV pack a punch. People will sit up and take notice of you.

Dig it! happens at different times throughout the week. Just register your interest by joining the Facebook Page below, messaging Caleb (the group admin) and we'll be in touch with you.

Soupacooks

Soupacooks will be a small group of six volunteers chopping and chatting together in the Gateway Centre kitchen. We will be making gorgeous, tasty, healthy soups and serving it as a special treat to some lucky recipients at the Gateway Centre. Soupacooks will be a six week group on Tuesdays 4pm-7pm. Each group will be in term time only. The volunteers will be working alongside Joan, a community nurse with a passion for a meal in one pot!
